They cannot replace doctors

2010/02/09

M.B.B.S, Taiping
I AGREE with Datin Hatijah Yusof that nurses' standards should be raised ("Lift our nurses' standards" -- NST, Jan 15).
But the job of lower ranking nurses involves changing patients' diapers and cleaning the patients, including bathing and dressing them and making their beds. It is for this reason that they are known as the support group.

So, too, are the laboratory technicians, microbiologists and pathologists. They are not in the frontline of medical service. They are not the ones who assess the patients and admit patients to the wards by writing case notes. This is the job of doctors. Medical assistants who assess and dispense medication to patients, too, are not doctors because they do not have a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) qualification.

Those in these categories can take exams to get their master's and then PhD in the support group professions.

The writer says she wants the PhD holders of this support group to be placed under the professional group. I don't agree. But since they have PhD in the studies related to the hospital support group, they should be known as professional support group.

If they want a further upgrading, they should take the MBBS exam. Why not attain the MBBS and then sit along with the doctors?

Professional nurses with PhD in nursing care could open their own private practice, as in Western countries. But it will not do well financially because the public is not interested in seeing nurses if they are sick; they want to see doctors. So, how can we place nurses with PhD on the same platform as medical doctors?

Many medical doctors will feel humiliated if support personnel are placed in the same category with them. But I suppose it will only add to other humiliations medical doctors face.

There is no prestige in our profession any more. For instance, laboratory technicians are made heads of pathology departments, lording it over medical doctors. And they earn more than us. Nurses are appointed hospital directors in Sabah. Seriously, there's nothing special about the medical profession any more.

Do a survey of government hospitals and you'll realise that there are hardly any older doctors around, because most of them would have been bullied into resigning or would have gone into private practice. Some, in their 60s, are hardly making ends meet because there are too many medical doctors around, although the government claims there are not enough doctors.

Why create a subsidiary group of hospital professionals, like degree-holding nurses, placed on the same grade and pay scale as medical doctors, and then put them on a fast track for hospital directorships?

Imagine having someone from the subsidiary group as your head of department and the head of the hospital. This cheapens the medical profession.

P/S:

This writing just simply put a smile on my face...reading through those words does not giving me any kind of humiliation, yet it makes me realize, many people do think without understanding, many people act brainlessly, many people got knowledge but do not know the meaning of humbleness and righteousness..

When generalization takes place, there will be destructions, whether small, tiny, huge, massive, it all depends on the people who react about it..

Allah really knows best..

O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).

 Celebrating the differences

We always need each other and will always do..How could we stand alone without others? Big-headeds + narrow-mindeds>>will they survivealone??

My dear medical, nursing and other health care members,
Health world is beyond things in our thick books and abundance of syllabus..It takes the whole life, the combination of body, mind and soul, heart and humanity..

Be responsive not reactive..See the bright side of anything..Bring the betterment altogether, and it worth far beyond we ever think.

Respect to be respected...Please just dont feel that we are the greats and the others are not..
Verily, Allah is The Ultimate Assessor
